Bike Friendly Programs

The Bicycle Friendly America programs recognizes states, communities and businesses for their efforts to promote bicycling and provide roadmaps to improve. The programs focus on achievements related to five categories often referred to as the Five Es. These are:

  • Engineering
  • Education
  • Encouragement
  • Enforcement
  • Evaluation & Planning

    A community must demonstrate achievements in each of the five categories in order to be considered for an award. A Bicycle Friendly State promotes cycling through legislation, policies, programs, and by creating new places to ride, educating motorists and cyclists, and encouraging people to bike for transportation and recreation.
