Biking While Black is a 2-series short documentary film centering on the daily experiences that Black lives encounter while bicycling. The first short film (9 minutes) Biking While Black: HOW SAFE ARE BLACK LIVES BICYCLING? was released in September 2021 by community organizer and mobility justice advocate, Yolanda Davis-Overstreet, and her team. And the second short (29.09 minutes) was released in September 2022 – Biking While Black: CONTINUING TO RIDE THROUGH DECRIMINALIZATION, DISENFRANCHISEMENT, AND GENTRIFICATION.

The duo-short films center around the existing mobility and racial justice issues, while uplifting Black bicyclists, catalyzing partnerships among mobility justice advocates, and thoughtfully addresses local experiences. The film’s narrative increases understanding of planning issues in Los Angeles by centering the question “How safe are Black lives while cycling?” Residents and mobility justice advocates share raw and personal experiences as well as data in this film to illustrate the deep need for planning processes rooted in racial justice.
